I'm building the torsion beams from the Tom Casper article in June/July 2010 issue. One purpose for which I want to use them is to glue up pairs of planks that will become part of a workbench top (need a flat surface for gluing). The issue is these pieces will be about 3 to 3 1/2 inches wide. In order for clamps to reach from both sides to clamp these pieces, I've thought of either making the central web of the torsion box narrower or, after the box is assembled and glued, drilling select holes in the sides to allow clamp heads to reach into the interior of the torsion box (to be directly beneath the pieces being glued). Will either of these solutions undermine the strength of the torsion beams? Which would be preferable? Thanks.

Hi, I'd love to help but I'm not clear about what you're trying to do. Are you gluing two 3" wide boards face to face, or edge to edge?
