I have been using a product called Behlen Pore-O-Pac (Mahogany) grain filler prior to applying my stain (Minwax Red Mahogany) on my projects. I just rub it in with a cloth. I don't use it for the purpose of filling the grain, but rather for the color it gives (it gives a very dark base color). Once the stain is applied on top it creates a lot of depth. I would like to reproduce the appearance, but without the grain filler, as it is a VERY messy job. It crumbles everywhere. I have tried mixing different stains to get a darker color but it does not penetrate like the grain filler.
YOur question interests me. I can't say i have used that method before to make a deep stain color. So i don't feel i could be the expert to answer that for you. However i do know Bob Turner who is a Mohawk rep. and he has 30 years experience in stains, so i will contact him and see what kind of suggestions he might have.

Hi Eric. I talked wiht Bob Turner (Mohawk rep) and he had a few questions. One, what type of wood are you using this method on, all types of wood, such as maple or just real grainy woods such as oak and mahogany? And two, are you using this method just for the deep rich tone? He has some suggestions for you, but wanted to make sure he gave you all the info you needed.
