I'm doing a project for a furniture making course I'm attending and whilst I've been using sketch up to draw up my plans, I'm interested to find out what software or package they use at American Woodworker for the publication.

Can anyone inform me of which software they use to draw up their projects and plans in their magazine.

Does anybody know?

Yours in good faith, G

Today, I found out I had signed up for a new year of this magazine. I had already done it last month, but they keep sending these emails telling you to subscribe before your subscription runs out. Well, I did, then they charged my card an extra $5.00 from what thee add said they would charge me.

So I called to find out why and found out they did the SAME THING TO ME LAST MONTH!

So If you get any email from American Woodworker, BE CAREFUL! Read all the receipts they give you to make sure they are charging you what they said they were going to charge you.

Then Check your bank account to make sure they didn't do the same thing to you last month, or the month before!

I had a different Magazine sign me up for FIVE YEARS, a couple of years ago, so I know they ALL do it.

Just watch your Accounts and check everything to make sure they are not scamming you out of more than they advertise!

10 free digital plans for issue 158

When I tried to download a couple of these plans , they are not the plans for issue 158, is this correct?
It is a bit disconcerting to see no other comments on this here. I am however new to this site so perhaps it has all been flogged about long ago. So this is my two cents worth.

With the help of a small but dedicated staff, I was all set to continue a great tradition. If you've seen our first issue, Spring ‘09, I hope you've noticed that Woodwork hasn't really changed.

Our plans for distributing Woodwork have changed, though. Due to a major and completely unexpected disruption in the newsstand distribution business, Woodwork will not continue as a quarterly this year. We will be publishing an annual issue this fall instead.

Chalk this up to the weak economy. Our publisher just made this call the other day, and it wasn’t easy.

Now for some good news: we’re launching a new Woodwork website May 1st. It will host blogs, forums, and galleries of photos, plus stories that have already appeared in recent issues of Woodwork. This site is our way of helping the Woodwork community grow even larger and stay connected.

In the meantime, we’ve started this forum to discuss Woodwork’s past, present and future. I welcome your contributions.

Be assured that the whole team here is eager to publish the next issue of Woodwork. We bought a business, but we also inherited a trust. We all want Woodwork to continue in the same spirit, and for that, we’ll need your understanding and help.

Talk to you soon,

Tom
Tom Caspar
Editor
Woodwork Magazine

NOTE: Former Woodwork Magazine subscribers may contact us with any questions.

Woodwork magazine is online

Just wanted to let everyone know that Woodwork magazine is online. I just stumbled upon it.

Dear Editor,

Let me begin by complimenting you on your publication and by expressing my enjoyment of reading it. I have only recently started setting up my woodworking shop (although I have done a bit of woodworking in the past) and I look forward to creating several of the projects that you have featured.

However, there is one point that was, in my opinion, overlooked in this particular article. The reason I noticed it is that I am in the process of deciding whether to build or buy a router table and this particular design caught my eye. I eagerly read (and reread) the article and then started looking at the list of materials that would be required for it. Well, actually, I started looking for the list of materials. What I found was a "cutting list" which, although eventually quite handy, does not provide the basis for someone to quickly determine what will be needed to complete the project.

A significant improvement to this article would have been a simple list of the material, in standard (or as standard as it comes) lumber units, e.g.
3/4" x 4" x 8' hardwood, qty 4
3/4" x 4' x 8' plywood, qty 2

As it is, I now have to try to figure out the layout for the cuts in order to determine how many units of what size of lumber I need to purchase. While this is not an impossible task, it is a task that should be unnecessary and is only made necessary by the omission of this finishing touch on the article by the author (which could have been "encouraged" by the editor ;-).

As I am really just now getting started in my woodworking, I am also just now getting started in selecting the publications to which I will be subscribing in an on-going basis. There are other publications that I have found to consistently supply a List of Materials along with either a List of Cuts or, in some cases, diagrams with the layout of the cuts, for instance, on a standard sheet of plywood. Since woodworking is not my current full-time job, I have to take into consideration the time required to figure out how much material I will need for projects as well as the time required for the projects (and, of course, the utility of the projects). I hope you can see that, especially for the weekend woodworker, the need and time required to figure out how much material will be required can significantly impact the marginal utility of a publication containing an article about the project.

I hope that, in future articles, you might encourage the inclusion of this information so that the projects might be just that little bit more accessible and your readers just that little bit more encouraged to tackle them.

Respectfully,

Ralph D. Wilson II
