I'd be looking at edge joining several boards, I use Titbond wood glue and it works great for me. Another option is getting thicker cut slabs and joining them, I see suppliers for this all the time and have a few that I can call. With proper edge joining and watching the grain you can make the joint lines dissapear. Coat it heavily with good clear coat and stain that's rated for out door use and you should be golden.

Plywood? You might for a while... but you'd be getting the outdoor rated sheets, edge banding would be just about pointless as it'll come right off any way. I'd only do this if it were a cheap job and the preson was looking for a quick fix. I wouldn't suggest this if you want to carve it.

Let me know if you want the links.

creating a sign...

ok friends i need your help i have been doin small signs an craft items for family an friends an different customers most of my wood is claimd items from the woods or my backyard; the sign she would like for me to make is 3' x 3' it has to withstand harsh outdoor weather as it will be out by the mailbox 24/7 i want to use cypress or oak but have not found any wood big enough, she has suggested useing oak or birch plywood but i dont thinks so; what do you think?
