I would agree with you, i think a chair made out of hickory would look nice, but it's not the best wood for outdoors. Hickory tends to move and distort during seasonal changes. It's also prone to pests and to rot in the ground. Some other choices for outdoor woods might be white oak, cedar or sassafras. The exterior poly will be fine, and offer it some protection. But i wouldn't expect a finish to protect a wood which is not suited for an evironment.

Hope this helps. When they are done send us a picture of you relaxing in them. I'd say have a cold drink in your hand but with winter coming you might want warm tea.:-)

Hickory Adirondack Chair

I would like to build two Adirondack chairs out of Hickory. The chairs will spend Spring, Summer and some of Fall outside in NE Minnesota. Is Hickory a good wood to use for the chairs or will it not stand up to our weather??

I plan on using an oil finish of exterior polyurethane finish.
