I have had mine since building it per Tom's original plan in another magazine, "Weekend Workbench." A great design.
My BIL has some materials left over from housebuilding and we want to do one for him. Available is some Weyerhaueser LSL engineered rim-board at 1-1/4" thickness and some sheets of 7/16" OSB. We can rip the LSL to a "near-stud" size of 1-1/4" x 3-3/8" and have more than enough for the bench, and skin the sections with the OSB.
The original design used 2x4 stock in SPF or whatever, and 1/2" plywood, the plywood being the skins of the leg, stretcher, and top work surface sections. Our plan is to skin with the OSB, and for the top, laminate an extra skin onto it of 1/4" tempered hardboard or MDF.
I think the net weight of the bench will be about the same as one done per the magazine article.

The LSL will be very stable for you. Good snag on those left overs. YOu got any pictures of your finished bench?
