I am building a slab mesquite sofa table.  It will be 31" tall and the slab is 10" wide X 2" thick X 5' long.  It weighs about 40 lbs.  The legs will be slab 1" thick mesquite.  I'm concerned about tipping stability with it being top heavy.  How wide should the base of the legs be to give it ample stability?

I have a couple of thoughts.

You could flare the legs outwards slightly--not too much.

Or you could add a lower shelf to add weight to the bottom half of the table.
