I am an avid American Woodworker magazine subscriber and reader.I have small shop in my garage with a band saw, radial arm saw, cutoff saw and a 10 inch wood lathe. My primary tasks are pens and bowls. I use the band saw to cut bowl blanks and the lathe for bowls and pens. Other saws are used sparingly.Dirt and dust are a major problem requiring the need for a dust collector.I'm overwhelmed by the number and sizes of dust collectors in the marketplace. What is your suggestion on size and type, cfm, bag, canister, and micron filtering size. Will dust collectors remove most of the lathe chips?.Penn State Industries has some good buys and this week Woodcraft has a Rikon (650 cfm), 5 micron bag on sale for $200.HelpP. F. I'm not a fan of Penn State Industries.
The size and type depend on if you want a portable or a stationary system.
Hello Paul. I realise when i comes to buying new tools the rescreach out there can be overwhelming. Doing homework really helps. Here is a link on the American Woodworker website that had an interesting add on to the dust collector.
Let me know what you decide on. Oh, and send in some picutres of your work. I'm sure we all would love to see it.

How is yours setup Chad ?
You caught me at an in-between time, Charlie. I used to have a Delta 50-850. I have a cluttered shop and i wasn't always able to get the dust collector where i wanted it. My plan was to add floor joists on top of the concrete slab so i could run hosing to each machine. Then of course put a plywood subfloor down. But like all things time and money were not there. So my Amish friend really needed a dust collector and i traded him it for a powermatic table saw.
So in other words, my shop is DUSTY!!!! :-)
For a ducted system I usually don't recommend anything less then a 2 hp DC.
Man, this place is like a ghost town. I posted something last week and it's STILL not here ! I give up.
I'd like to ask you to not give up just yet. We are dong our best to post the comments and keep out the spam. We are making improvements to make posts easier and faster. Building a woodworking forum so we all can ask questions, comment, and share is high on our list. We value you as a regualr visitor and value your thoughts and ideas. And I'd like to personally thank you for your suggestions.
I think that you have me confused with someone thats retired which I'm not. 'm tired of promoting woodworking and tools for free, especially when most of the tool manufacturers sent our jobs overseas. If you want to make money promoting woodworking and tools, then knock yourself out, I'm not going to help you prosper while I go deeper into debt.
I'm not sure where we got off track here, but I'd have to say I'd agree with you if you are talking about keeping jobs here in America.
Chad, I've been to alot of woodworking forums over the years and it's not just this forum, it's all of them. They expect that people are going to come to them and work for free solving peoples woodworking and machinery problems, and promoting tools and machinery, and if you don't, well your just a bad guy. I would compare it to someone going to a hardware store occasionally and volunteering their time there. Who does that ? It's rediculous.
Hi ya Charlie. I can understand your thoughts. It's true we live in a digital age where information (some correct, some wrong) is available at the push of a button. Giving out free advice only comes from experience in "doing it". No matter what you or I type, the others still have to get out in the shops and try it for themselves. I've learned over the years that sometimes the ones that i helped are not necessary those who i am directing helping, but others who might be watching. I like to believe that my kindness helps more than those i am seeing.
I'd like to tell you your advice, comments, and thoughts are appreicated. Even if we all can't agree, we can take pleasure in the fact that we all live in a wonderful country where we can all have different opinions and still care for each other.
Hope you coome back offen. I'll be here:-)
