I came up with this 5-ft.-tall decanter to recycle my varnish-contaminated mineral spirits. It’s made from standard plumbing supplies from the local home center (about $50). It holds a gallon of mineral spirits and hangs in a cool, dry place, away from heat or flames, as recommended on the mineral spirits container. I used high-strength Loctite adhesive for all the joints except the bottom cap. There I used medium-strength Loctite, so I can easily remove the cap to clean out the solids that accumulate in the trap. Two to three days after pouring in used mineral spirits, the varnish solids settle out, leaving everything above the ball valve clear and ready to reuse.
