Rout Narrow Stock with Ease

RATE THIS:

Since I don’t have a router table, routing narrow stock is doubly tough. First, it’s hard to hold the stock in position. Second, it’s virtually impossible to balance the router as I rout.

My system solves both problems. I use a notched board to hold the narrow stock and an outrigger to stabilize the router. Routing presses the stock securely against the notched board, which is clamped to the bench. The outrigger is simply an offcut of the narrow stock, screwed to the router base. I just replace one of the base’s mounting screws with a longer one.

I make sure the surface the outrigger will ride on is smooth and clear of debris and I stop routing about 1 in. away from the notch.
